The sex of humans depends on the whether or not you are carrying a Y chromosome or not. Females carry to X sex chromosomes, vs male a XY combination. The Y chromosomes carry the gene that initiates the “male” process. I will leave it here but can explain more about how that all works.

sex or gender is determined by the the second sex chromosome receives from the father. mothers provide the X chromosome as they are XX. the father will provide either an X or Y chromosome hence a girl XX or boy XY is born.
