Red Blood Cells have small pieces on them called antigens. These antigens are unique in that you can have antigen A or B or AB or not have at all. When you have antigen A, you will naturally have antibody B flowing in the blood. If you have antigen B, you will have antibody A, and if you have antigens AB, you will have no antibodies, while if you have no antigens – you will have both antibodies A and B. This is the basis of blood transfusion.
