  An atom is the smallest unit of matter. It comprises of a nuclei and electrons that orbit the nuclei (simplistic model). If we knock the electrons or the protons, the atom may change to a different state of matter. Sometimes this is accompanied by release of energy as the case of a nuclear reaction.
