Mathematics is not a science. Mathematics deals with logic which does not have to apply to the “real” world. Some mathematics deals with abstract concepts which has no relation with science (e.g numbers). For a field of knowledge to be a science it has to involve making observations about something and gaining an understanding after making several experiments and following a scientific method of experimentation and deduction. Having said that, science uses mathematics as a tool to help explain or understand a phenomena of interest. Science requires presentation of evidence as a form of correctness for a given way of thinking(theorem) while mathematics requires proof often arrived at through logic.

I think of mathematics as a language that allows me to express science in a rigorous way. I use math to communicate the behavior of a system. Science starts when you try to find evidence on whether or not the behavior you just spoke about using the language of math is true or not.
