Our bodies store energy in the form of sugar or fats in the body. To convert these sugars to active energy takes a while and a complex biochemical mechanism. By taking glucose, the athlete provides the body with raw energy in anticipation for an energy dependent task (running). This way he also compensates and replaces the energy he/she would have utilised.
