Great question. I am excited Kevin, that you’re hopeful we will get a cure. Please do well in school so that you come and advance the ongoing research in Cancer. A lot is going on in the field; and I am hopeful just like you are – that we will get a cure.
I don’t believe we will cure cancer any time soon. Cancer is a group of diseases with tremendous complexity. There are some promising therapies based on genetic therapy and stem cell research that cure cancer. I do believe that we will find ways to detect cancer in earlier and earlier stages. I also believe that recent advances in computer science will develop AI’s that can be used to suggest better diagnostic and therapies. I do worry though that the nature of the disease is so complex that finding actual cures is maybe too much to ask for. Rather we should learn to reduce as much of risk as possible to the extent we know what they are. And also invest much more in new technologies, such as gene therapy, stem cells, AI, etc. But long ways to go for mankind. Also think about this: even if we find solutions like they exist for specific cancers, will we be able to offer them in a government hospital in Kenya? The answer is no because they are too expensive. What should we do about it?
